Arriving at Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport and planning to travel to Lovina? There are quite a few alternatives based on how independent you want to be and your budget.
I’ve done this trip before and after trying different transport options, I can safely say which one is worth going for!
I would recommend booking a private driver because it’s actually quite affordable in Bali and it would wait for you at the airport (plus tracking your flight in case there are any delays!).
That being said, in this blog post, I’ll list all the options to get from Denpasar Airport to Lovina so you can choose what works best for you!

Distance and Travel Time from Denpasar Airport to Lovina
The distance between Denpasar Airport and Lovina is approximately 90 kilometres (56 miles). The drive takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and the route you choose.
The roads to Lovina pass through mountainous areas, so travel times may vary.
If you tend to get car sick, I recommend not eating before this trip because there are quite a few curves when going through Munduk (just before Lovina)!
Options For Getting From Denpasar Airport To Lovina
Here are the four main options to travel from Denpasar Airport to Lovina. Each comes with different comfort and cost levels, so you can pick what suits you best.
Option 1: Book a Private Driver in Advance
Hiring a private driver is one of the easiest ways to get to Lovina. A driver will meet you at the airport and take you directly to your accommodation.
This is a great choice if you have heavy luggage or are arriving late at night.
- Cost: Prices typically range from IDR 700,000 to IDR 900,000 (USD 45–60) for a one-way trip.
- How to Book: You can book a driver through Klook.com. Many drivers also allow for short stops along the way if you’d like to explore.

Option 2: Use The Local Apps
Grab and Gojek are popular ride-booking services in Bali (similar to Uber). They offer car rides directly from the airport, although availability for long-distance trips like Lovina can vary.
However, remember that these apps are not available in Lovina. So you can use them to get to Lovina but not once you’re there.
- Cost: Fares start around IDR 500,000 (USD 32), but this depends on demand and availability.
- Tips: Ensure you have the app downloaded and set up with a payment method before you arrive. The designated pick-up zones for Grab and Gojek are outside the terminal.
Option 3: Rent a Car or Scooter
Renting a vehicle gives you the flexibility to travel at your own pace and make stops along the way (I will touch on this later).
- Car Rental: Cars can be rented for around IDR 300,000 (USD 20) per day, excluding fuel. Make sure to rent through a reputable company such as Klook.com.
- Scooter Rental: Scooters are available for about IDR 60,000 to 100,000 (USD 4–7) per day. This option is better suited for experienced riders, as the road to Lovina includes hilly and winding stretches.

Option 4: Public Transport (Bus or Shuttle)
If you are travelling on a tight budget, public transport is the most affordable way to reach Lovina. While less convenient than other options, it’s a viable choice if you’re not in a rush.
- Public Bus: Buses operate from Ubung Bus Terminal in Denpasar to Lovina. From the airport, you’ll need to take a taxi to the terminal first.
- Shuttle Services: Perama Tour offers shuttle buses from the south of Bali to Lovina. Tickets range from IDR 150,000 to 200,000 (USD 10–13).

Places to Stop Along the Way
If you’re driving or hiring a private car, consider stopping at one of the places below. I’ve done it before and it worked really well. You get a taste of Bali straight away and a small break from the long drive!
Ulun Danu Temple: This iconic temple sits by Lake Beratan and is a must-see on your journey to Lovina. You can walk around the temple grounds, take photos by the lake, and enjoy light snacks from nearby food vendors.
Do stop here even if it’s raining, I can guarantee it’s still worth it. If you are going with the driver, you can ask him to wait for one hour. That’s all it will take to cover the area.
Munduk: This small village is surrounded by coffee plantations and offers some of the best locally brewed Balinese coffee.
The road from the airport to Lovina goes through Munduk anyway and you will love what you will see from the windows!
If you want to stop for a meal, opt for The Botanist in Munduk, it’s a beautiful and delicious restaurant. You can also visit some of the famous Munduk Waterfalls on the way!
Lake Buyan and Lake Tamblingan: These twin lakes are located near Munduk and are stunning! There are several roadside viewpoints perfect for taking photos or taking a break from the drive.

Choosing The Best Option To Get To Lovina
So now that I’ve given you a few options to get from Denpasar Airport to Lovina, let me give you some tips on what to choose.
- Comfortable and stress-free option: The private driver is the best choice here. There is nothing to think about, you just jump on and you will get to your destination. Plus, you can still ask him to stop along the way if you want to.
- Affordable but painful option: Public buses are very affordable BUT they are not that reliable in Bali. So if you are on a budget and have an unlimited amount of patience, then go for the bus! However, make sure to check the luggage limit per person.
- Total independence: Renting a car or scooter gives you complete freedom to go anywhere you want anytime you want. However, the roads around Munduk are not that easy to navigate, especially at night time – so keep that in mind!

Lovina is approximately 75 kilometres (47 miles) from Ubud, and the drive takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. One of the best ways to get from Lovina to Ubud is with a private driver or bus!
Driving at night is not recommended, as the route includes poorly lit mountain roads. If you must travel late, hiring a private driver is the safest option.
Morning or early afternoon is ideal to avoid traffic and enjoy the drive in daylight.
