Must-Visit Waterfalls Near Munduk in North Bali

If you’re planning a trip to North Bali and want to see the island’s most impressive waterfalls without wasting time, Munduk is a great place to start.

The village has a few waterfalls like Golden Valley, but most of the ones people talk about are actually located just outside Munduk. That includes Sekumpul, the tallest waterfall in Bali and a must-see if you’re up for a bit of a hike.

My favourite of them all was Bayumala Waterfalls. It was easy to reach, perfect for swimming, and had a proper changing room which made the visit much more comfortable.

There were also lots of great photo spots, including a cute bridge and several areas that looked amazing on camera!

In this post, I’ll go over the best waterfalls in and around Munduk. I’ll highlight the ones worth visiting if you’re short on time and include tips, entry prices, and what to expect so you’re ready before you head out.

Where Are the Munduk Waterfalls Located?

The waterfalls are spread across the northern region of Bali, with Munduk village being the ideal base for your trip.

In the above map, I’ve highlighted the key waterfalls you can visit from Munduk, you can also find them listed below.

However, if you only have one day available, I recommend visiting Bayumala, Sekumplul and Fiji Waterfalls (more on this later on).

How to get to the Waterfalls in Munduk

From Ubud, the drive to Munduk takes about 2.5 hours. From Denpasar or Canggu, it’s roughly 2.5 to 3 hours.

One of the easiest ways to get to Munduk is by booking a private driver. It’s comfortable, stress-free, and your driver will know all the best spots along the way.

Prefer having your own car? Renting a car allows you to set your own schedule and enjoy a having a roof for when it rains + really nice AC!

There’s also the option of booking a Grab taxi, though drivers will not stop on the way.

They would only take you from A to B, while your private driver is paid by the day or hour, so it’s a lot more flexible.

I always get my private driver so I can stop at temples on the way or shops if I need anything!

Important Things To Know About Munduk

Munduk is a Balinese village located in the highlands and is known for its cooler temperatures and amazing mountain views.

The distances between the waterfalls are manageable by scooter or car, and their proximity to each other makes it easy to plan a day trip or a longer holiday. 

Remember that Munduk is about 1,500 meters above sea level, so you may experience altitude sickness for a couple of days!

I personally only had a bit of a headache and that’s it, but every person is different.

Other tips for Munduk: 

• There are no international supermarkets or big supermarkets such as Bintang, Pepito or Coco

• Pack jackets, long leggings and umbrellas or ponchos. Munduk will be rainy and colder compared to other locations in Bali keep that in mind when packing.

• Bring your mosquito repellent (the one given at my resort was organic but too light and it didn’t work for me)

Best Waterfalls To Visit From Munduk

Let me start with the best waterfalls you can explore by using Munduk as your base.

As mentioned before, there are also waterfalls within the Munduk village (which you can read about later in this blog post), however, if you are running out of time I would prioritise the ones that are outside the village because they are really worth visiting! 

Here it goes…

Bayumala Waterfalls (Twin Waterfalls)

Bayumala Waterfalls, also called the Twin Waterfalls, are some of the most visited because they’re fairly easy to reach, there are good facilities and are really affordable.

This spot is ideal for swimming, it also comes with 2 stunning bridges and a small waterfall where you can swim without any crowds!

Entrance Fee: IDR 50,000 per person.

• Access: There is a 15-minute walk from the parking area to the ticket office. Then you can either walk or take a scooter ride for IDR 25,000 one way. From the drop-off point, it’s a further 20-minute walk downstairs. The stairs are in good condition and are quite easy. 

• Facilities: Changing rooms and toilets are available near the waterfall. So you can easily get changed when you’re downstairs. Wear comfortable shoes or sandals if you’re a clumsy girl like me!

• Pro Tip: Visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Peak times can get busy, especially around the two bridges which are popular for photos.

Note about the changing rooms by Bayumala Waterfalls

The changing rooms don’t lock and don’t really provide complete privacy. You can see from the picture above what to expect.

There are only 2 cabins, so if you’re visiting during high season, you might need to queue a bit!

I found the changing rooms very comfortable because they are normally hard to find in natural spots like this and I was able to get ready for a nice swim!

I brought my microfibre towel to dry off after and wear comfortable clothes to hike back up!

Twin Waterfall Wanagiri

-> Skip completely if you are running out of time!

Twin Waterfall Wanagiri is located near the Bayumala Waterfall. The hike to this waterfall is relatively short, taking about 10–15 minutes from the parking area.

• Entrance Fee: IDR 40,000 per person.

• Access: A short trek from the main road, with some sections requiring extra caution due to slippery rocks.

• Facilities: Limited amenities, so come prepared with your own supplies like water and snacks!

Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall

-> Skip completely if you are running out of time!

Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfall is a collection of smaller waterfalls that flow in unique patterns

Entrance Fee: IDR 30,000 per person.

• Access: A 20-minute walk from the parking area. The trail is well-marked and relatively easy.

• Facilities: Basic amenities, including toilets, are available. Be sure to carry a reusable water bottle and a towel.

Sekumpul Waterfalls

Sekumpul Waterfalls are Bali’s tallest waterfalls (80 meters tall!), with several streams plunging down a high cliff surrounded by dense and stunning vegetation. 

• Entrance Fee: A bit pricey but 100% worth it! IDR 300,000 ($18), which includes a local guide and a scooter ride to the starting point of the trek.

• Access: After a 20-minute scooter ride, you’ll need to descend approximately 350 steps to reach the base of the falls. The walk can be challenging, but the views are completely worth the effort.

• Swimming: Swimming isn’t always safe here due to the strong current, so be careful!

• Pro Tip: Allocate plenty of time for this visit, as the hike and steps can take longer than expected.

Fiji Waterfalls

Located a short walk from Sekumpul, Fiji Waterfalls are a must-see in Munduk. They are huge and come with 3 streams!

These are probably the waterfalls that impressed me the most, probably because of their power and the wildness around them!

Access: A 7-minute walk from Sekumpul Waterfall.

• Swimming: Unlike Sekumpul, swimming isn’t allowed here, but it’s a great spot for photography.

• Facilities: Changing rooms and bathrooms are located by the ticket booth.

Munduk Waterfalls Trek

As mentioned before, you can also see some waterfalls within Munduk village. The Munduk Waterfalls Trek is an excellent way to explore the waterfalls in one go!

The trek is totally doable on your own and it takes about 3–4 hours. It goes through coffee plantations, deep forests, and traditional farmland.

Suggested Itinerary for Munduk Waterfalls

To make the most of your trip, I would recommend the following this 1-day itinerary that covers the top waterfalls from Munduk:

Morning:

Start your day with a visit to Bayumala Waterfalls, arriving early to enjoy the pool before it gets crowded. Allow 2-3 hours here. You can get pictures from the waterfall, 2 bridges and go for a swim in the smaller waterfall. 

-> If you have more time, do visit Bayumala and Banyu Wana Amertha Waterfalls

Lunch: Stop at a local restaurant in Munduk for a meal before heading to the next set of waterfalls. There are quite a few Warungs (family-run restaurants) in the area. 

Afternoon: 

Go straight to Sekumpul and Fiji Waterfalls, allocating enough time for the hike and to enjoy the views. 

If you are staying in Munduk for the night (check my recommendations below) I would suggest having dinner at The Botanist. It’s a beautiful and delicious spot!

Pro Tips for Visiting Munduk Waterfalls

• What to Bring: Wear comfortable footwear suitable for hiking, and bring swimwear, a towel, and a reusable water bottle. Snacks and small change are also handy for entry fees.

• Travel Tips: If you tend to get car sick, avoid heavy meals before the drive to Munduk as the roads can be winding.

• Timing: Arrive early to avoid the busiest times and to enjoy a quieter experience. If you visit during the rainy season (between October and February), it won’t be busy but you have to deal with slippery stairs and heavy rain. 

• Guides: For Sekumpul and Fiji Waterfalls, a local guide is mandatory and ensures you navigate the area safely (read more on this guide)

To visit Munduk Waterfalls bring appropriate gear, bring some snacks and plan your itinerary carefully. In case you only have time for 1 waterfall spot, I would recommend Bayumala Waterfalls because you can swim in them, there are good facilities and are fairly easy to reach!
