Gili Trawangan might be small, but it surprised me with how many unique places there are to stay, regardless of whether you are a solo traveller or not. When I first arrived, I wasn’t expecting much beyond a few basic hostels.

What’s The Best Area To Stay In Gili Trawangan?
I’ll be honest, for me it depends on the season. When I visit during the rainy season, I book my accommodation near the harbour.
If I visit during the dry season (from May to September, to be precise), I would look for a place on the sunset side (the western part of the island).
Why?
Because in the wet season it rains A LOT. Although streets are now paved, crossing the island with my suitcase and backpack is not fun! I’ve done it many times and regretted it!
The island is not big, so you might have to carry it for 30 to 40 minutes, but I always found it painful. So I would rather stay on the harbour side and walk 5/10 minutes to my hotel and cycle to watch the sunset every day!
During the dry season, it’s a different situation! The island is completely dry, and carrying your suitcase is super smooth! It’s a pleasant stroll and you get to familiarise yourself with the island.
You will notice there are horse carts everywhere; that’s how hotels would pick you up. If you love animals, turn down the offer and walk instead. The island is small enough to do so 🙂

Yes, you can walk around Gili Trawangan. The island is small and walkable, taking about two hours to circumnavigate on foot.
There are no motorised vehicles, which makes walking a pleasant and safe way to explore the island. I would suggest hiring a bike to get to places faster or enjoy a lovely ride around the island!
The Gili Islands are generally safe for travellers, including female solo travellers. The community is welcoming, and crime rates are low.
However, it’s always advisable to take standard precautions, such as keeping an eye on your belongings and staying aware of your surroundings, especially at night.
Going from Bali to the Gilis could be an absolute nightmare, so you really need to know which boat to go for!
The easiest way to get from Bali to Gili Trawangan is from Padang Bai Harbour and it takes approximately 2 hours.

If you still don’t know where to stay in Gili T, I’ll give you a little tip. In my opinion, La Cocoteraie Ecolodge is the most unique place on the island. Actually, as I’m updating this blog post, I can see that most of my readers agree! The majority have booked the ecolodge after going through my detailed list!
