Need A Shower At Heathrow Airport? Here’s What To Do!

Heathrow Airport is not only a good place to shower between your flights, but it’s also one of the best places in the world for a layover because there is a lot to do! Although showers are not free in this airport, they are available at pretty much all terminals for a fee (unless you are flying first/business class). Showers are really clean, and you would get towels + toiletries included. Shops here are amazing. I’m not a shopping person, but I really enjoy my layovers here. I would buy chocolate bars and a good book and sit undisturbed after my shower – niceeee!

In this blog post, I will tell you all you need to know about shower facilities in Heathrow airport, layovers at the airport or London and much more!

Let’s dive in!

Your Shower Options:

Option Where Best For How
Plaza Premium Lounge T2 & T4 Shower access 👉 Book here
Club Aspire Lounge T3 Priority Pass 👉 Check lounges
Airline Lounges Varies Business/ First Class Check with airline

Plaza Premium Lounge

The Plaza Premium Lounge is the only shower you can reserve in advance at Heathrow Airport if you are not flying in Business, First class or have a lounge membership.

You can book access through GetYourGuide. Inside, you’ll find hot showers, comfy seating, Wi-Fi, and hot meals. The Terminal 2 and Terminal 4 lounges both have showers available, and there’s a separate Arrivals Lounge in Terminal 2 if you’re fresh off a long flight.

I have to say, food here is not the best, but if you’re only looking for a shower and a place to crash, it’s ok! Keep reading for food options at the airport 😉

Price: Starting from $30

Showers in Priority Pass Lounges

If you have a Priority Pass (a membership that allows you access to worldwide lounges), you’ve got one option: Club Aspire Lounge located in Terminal 3.

It’s best to double-check your Priority Pass app for availability and access times, some lounges get busy during peak hours, so pre-booking where available is smart. Before reserving, make sure to check if the lounge has showers (not all of them do).

Business Class Flyers: You’re Probably Covered

View of the sunset through the large glass windows of Heathrow Airport, showing planes on the tarmac and the orange sky in the distance.

If you’re flying business or first class, don’t forget that your airline may already give you access to a lounge with showers. British Airways, Emirates, Qatar, and a few other carriers have their own premium lounges at Heathrow, all with shower suites. Just follow the signs after security or ask at the transfer desk.

Other Ways to Freshen Up

Even if you’re not paying for lounge access, Heathrow’s regular bathrooms are more spacious than most. While they don’t have showers, you’ll find large sinks, good lighting, and enough space to do a mini refresh with wipes and a travel-sized face wash.

Where to Sleep at Heathrow Airport

While Heathrow doesn’t have a classic “transit hotel” inside security, there are a few hotels directly connected to the terminals—great if you don’t want to deal with shuttle buses or long walks.

These hotels are within easy walking distance from the airport and get consistently good reviews:

➡️ Aerotel London Heathrow Airport, Terminal 2 & Terminal 3

➡️ Hilton Garden Inn London Heathrow, Terminal 2 and 3

➡️ Holiday Inn Express – London Heathrow T4, by IHG

Incredibly beautiful places to stay, about a 30-minute drive from the airport

We all know that hotels by the airport are convenient, but not as nice as hotels in the centre. I lived in London for 10 years, and these are the secret hotels I’ve always recommended to friends and family. They are STUNNING and not that far from the airport. Let me reveal them to you!

Monkey Island Estate – Small Luxury Hotels of the World

If you want to experience the excellence of English accommodation and service, this is the place to go. When I went, I was told that even members of the Royal Family had been there as guests. I can totally see it now!

The Monkey Island Estate is super private, quiet, and perfectly designed down to the smallest detail. Also, as you can tell from the title, this is an island by the Thames – the thought of staying in such a tiny island excited me so much! And, keep in mind this place is only 20 minutes away from the airport! You would need a private transfer to get here as it’s in the countryside!

The rooms are beautifully decorated, there is a comfortable cafe and restaurant area where you can work too. I took some early morning video calls from there, and the wifi was super strong. I really enjoyed the breakfast included, and let me tell you, I loved the music in the background, it was just right!

The staff is lovely too, they are incredibly passionate about the estate, so they will tell you all the stories and treat you like a family member.

Price: Rooms start from about $240, really nothing compared to what you get!

Richmond Hill Hotel

Richmond is the closest cute area of London to stay, which is also close to the airport and perfectly connected to the city centre. While the previous recommendation was for privacy and quietness, here you can still enjoy a bit of nature, stay in a quintessential English neighbourhood, but you can easily go anywhere you want to! Let me introduce you to the Richmond Hill Hotel!

This place is right next to Richmond Park, which is one of the best parks in London. You get to see wild deer and the perfect view over central London. The hotel is super elegant with great service and a lovely restaurant/bar. If you are curious about the famous “Afternoon tea”, you can totally get it there or even just a normal cup of tea.

Distance from the airport? Around 30 minutes by car! (I would suggest booking a private transfer for this hotel!)

Price: Rooms start from about $200

Getting to London from Heathrow

If you’re planning to leave the airport during your layover or just heading into the city, there are several easy ways to get from Heathrow to Central London:

Express Train to Paddington

The Heathrow Express is the quickest way to reach the city. Trains run every 15 minutes and take you straight to Paddington Station in about the same amount of time. It’s perfect if you’re in a rush or want to maximise your time in London.

👉 Check Trains Timelines And Prices

Private Transfer

For a completely stress-free journey, book a private transfer. Your driver will pick you up directly at the terminal and drop you off at your accommodation or chosen spot in the city. Ideal if you have a lot of luggage or just want a smooth ride without navigating public transport.

👉 Book Your Private Transfer Here

Budget Bus Transfer

The Heathrow to Central London bus is the most budget-friendly option. It takes longer than the train, but if you’re not in a rush, it’s a great way to save a few pounds and still get to popular London spots.

👉 Check Bus Schedule

Switching Airports

Need to catch a flight from a different airport? There’s a bus transfer to Stansted that makes it easier to travel between terminals. I’ve used it many times, it’s reliable and comfortable!

Make you you allow enough time for the bus to reach Stansted Airport, it will take time as it will cross the city and there might be traffic! I would factor in maybe 2 hours just to play safe!

Heading to Southampton

If you’re continuing your journey by cruise or heading south, the Heathrow to Southampton bus is a direct connection to the port city.

Picadilly Line to Central London

When I used to live in London, I took the Picadilly Line every day and let me tell you it was probably the worst underground line ever! If you are not in a rush, definitely take it because it’s the cheapest way to go from and to the airport, but don’t count on it because it’s not reliable, and you might miss your flight! Read more information on the London Underground on the official site here.

Example of the underground website in London

As you can see above, once you land on the site, you can see the updates related to every line of the underground. The Picadilly line is the one that connects central London to Heathrow Airport, so it’s the one you need to keep an eye on! On the top left side of the image, there is also a section called “plan your journey”, that’s where you can type your start point and destination, they will tell you exactly how to get there and if the train has been delayed. You can also take the Elizabeth Line to Paddington (central London), but it’s double the price.

What To do On Your Layover In The Airport

Shelf stocked with various chocolate bars and snacks at a Heathrow Airport shop, including Cadbury, Galaxy, and other familiar UK brands.

As mentioned before, I would stay at Heathrow Airport for days. There are great shops and comfort zones to chill or work. Here are a few examples:

  • Boots (store): This is some sort of skincare and pharmacy shop. I normally grab face, hands and feet masks because they are great and not too expensive.

  • WHSmith (store): Great for magazines, books, London souvenirs and CHOCOLATE BARS! Get Hip chocolate if you are lactose intolerant, it’s so good. Otherwise, Coco or Green & Black’s are delicious!

  • Pret A Manger (cafe): Head here for healthy snacks, fruits and tea.

  • The Bookshop by WHSmith (book shop): There is a really good selection of books here, sometimes with a good sale too.

  • Fortnum & Mason (English specialities shop): This is a really good quality shop for English teas, jams, biscuits and souvenirs. This is a very popular brand in England. Go check it out! There is also a bar where you can get prosecco and these sorts of things during your layover if you fancy it!

  • Most terminals have dedicated quiet zones and workstations—handy if you need to get stuff done.

  • Water Fountains in Heathrow Airport: There are free water stations all over the airport (yay for avoiding single-use plastic). However, if you are in a cafe or restaurant already don’t be shy and ask them to refill your water bottle, they will be happy to do it for you!
Green travel backpack and carry on suitcase sit beside airport seats with a plane visible through the terminal window. Headphones toiletries a sleep mask earplugs and a reusable water bottle are arranged with the backpack as travel essentials.

Things To do On A Layover In London

🖐🏼❗Before leaving the airport and heading to London, make sure you have data on your phone -> I would recommend Ubigi, which is the best eSIM provider when travelling abroad! You should also get your travel insurance sorted -> I’m with Safety Wing, it’s easy to use and affordable!

Girl with short curly hair smiling with the sun on her face. She is wearing a pink jumper. Behind her there is a big river with the London eye in the background. The London Eye is a big wheel. There is also a boat parked behind the girl.

If you’ve never been to London before, make sure to go here:

– Walk by the River Thames. Get off the London Bridge underground station and walk by the Thames towards Waterloo. This is a beautiful walk and you get to see some of the most important landmarks in London, including Tower Bridge, the London Eye and Westminster.

🍔 Insider Tip: If you are hungry, walk towards Victoria Station and head to this amazing food court called Market Halls Victoria. There are different delicious stands, and the food is pretty affordable!

– Buckingham Palace. You can totally walk from Westminster to Buckingham Palace (18 minutes walk) and explore on your own,

or take this really good tour ➡️ Westminster Abbey, Big Ben & Buckingham Guided Tour! It’s fun and the guide is super insightful!

– Columbia Road Flower Market. This is only on Sundays, and it’s spectacular. Not only the market, but all around it. There are musicians, amazing cafes and independent shops. You can even get a guided tour here first and then explore on your own.

Short on time but still want to see the city? This 👉 Layover London Private Tour is a great way to turn a long layover into a mini-adventure. You’ll be picked up at the airport and shown the highlights of London before being dropped back in time for your flight. This way, you don’t have to worry about transport or where to go!

Shower facilities in London before heading to the airport

If you want to shower before heading back to the airport, you have to go through some tricks I’ve also recommended to do in Bali. Meaning you could go to a sports class in London and take advantage of the showers, or get a nice massage at the SPA and shower there. If you’re into spinning, this place called 1Rebel is fantastic! Showers here are a dream, and they even provide nice towels!

Luggage Storage in Terminal 4 and Central London

Need somewhere to stash your bags during a layover? There’s luggage storage available at Heathrow Terminal 4, which is especially handy if you’re flying in or out from there and don’t want to carry everything around the airport. If you’re planning to head into the city, luggage storage in Central London is available near major stations like Victoria, King’s Cross, and Paddington—so you can explore hands-free before heading back to catch your flight.

Yes! Most airports, including Heathrow, do not offer free public showers. If you want to freshen up at Heathrow, you’ll need to access a paid lounge or use a premium airline lounge included with First or Business Class tickets.
That said, a few international airports do offer free shower facilities:
Dubai International Airport – Free showers are available in some terminals, depending on your location and airline.

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) – Free showers are available in the satellite building, near the Aerotrain platform.

Incheon International Airport (Seoul) – Free showers are available for transit passengers in both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Tokyo Narita Airport – Offers free showers in certain transit areas, usually with a time limit.

Everywhere else, you’ll usually need to pay for lounge access, like in Heathrow Airport, or book a nearby hotel with shower ac

Are there shower facilities at Heathrow Terminal 5?

Yes. Terminal 5 has several lounges offering showers, including the Plaza Premium Lounge. If you have Priority Pass, you’ll also have access to multiple lounges with shower amenities in this terminal.

Yes, lounge access can be booked by anyone, regardless of airline or class of ticket. If you’re only interested in a shower, it’s still worth booking a lounge since single-use shower rooms aren’t available.

Is there a time limit for using the lounge showers?

Typically, lounges allow you to stay for 3–6 hours, depending on the booking. The shower itself usually has no strict time limit, but it’s best to be mindful if the lounge is busy.

Last few tips

If you’re leaving the airport for a layover, keep in mind that Heathrow is a big airport, so getting through security could take a long time. As I said earlier, there is a lot to do anyway, so you won’t get bored!
