Nyepi Day in Bali, also known as the Day of Silence, is the most important holiday in the Balinese Hindu calendar.
It’s a day of complete silence, fasting, and reflection. It’s a very unique experience for sure, but you’ve got to be prepared!
In this blog post, I will tell you all about Silence Day in Bali, what’s allowed, what’s not and what you can do about it!

What Is the Day of Silence in Bali?
Nyepi Day, the Day of Silence, is the most significant holiday in the Balinese Hindu calendar, marking the beginning of the Balinese New Year.
Dedicated to self-reflection and spiritual cleansing, it is a time for the island’s inhabitants to focus on balance and harmony.
Unlike typical New Year celebrations, Nyepi is observed with fasting, meditation, and a full 24 hours of silence across Bali.
This stillness serves a deeper purpose: tricking evil spirits into believing the island is deserted, so they leave it in peace.
The preparation begins the night before with the Ogoh-Ogoh parades, where giant demon-like effigies are carried through the streets.
These colourful, monstrous creations represent negative forces and are paraded with chaotic movements, spinning, swaying, and halting unpredictably, to confuse the spirits.
Once the parade ends, the effigies are burned in a symbolic act to rid the island of evil. On Nyepi itself, the silence is absolute.
No lights, no travel, and even the airport shuts down. Locals stay indoors, and Wi-Fi is cut off in many areas to maintain the illusion of an empty, lifeless island.
What’s The Best Place To Watch The Parade?
Let me start with the fact that wherever you want to watch the parade – you’ve got to get there early because it will get busy!
That being said, the Ogoh Ogoh parades will be everywhere in Bali, however, considering that Ubud is THE cultural hub of Bali, the parade there will be remarkable. Alternatively in Denpasar or Sanur, if you are staying in the area!
When Is Nyepi?
In 2025, Nyepi Day will fall on Saturday, March 29th. The Day of Silence lasts from 6 a.m. on March 29th until 6 a.m. on March 30th, during which the entire island observes strict rules of silence and reflection.
Here are the dates for Nyepi in the upcoming years:
2026: Tuesday, March 17th
2027: Sunday, March 7th
2028: Saturday, March 25th
2029: Thursday, March 15th
2030: Tuesday, March 5th
What to Expect on Nyepi Day
On Nyepi Day, the entire island of Bali comes to a standstill as strict rules are observed:
❌ No Travel: All roads will be empty, and even Rai International Airport will shut down for 24 hours. Flights in and out of Bali will not operate on this day!
❌ No Work or Entertainment: Shops, restaurants, and attractions will close. You won’t find any open businesses, markets, or services during this time.
❌ No Lights or Noise: Lights are turned off at night, and minimal noise is encouraged. Tourists are expected to keep quiet and stay indoors.
❌ Wi-Fi Cutoff: Internet services may be restricted or slowed down by some providers. If you are a females solo traveller like me, make sure you tell your family and friends about it so they don’t get worried if they don’t hear from you 💛
❌ Mandatory Quiet: The silence and stillness extend to everyone on the island, locals and visitors alike.
Even the beaches and streets remain deserted and there will be officials patrolling the streets making sure nobody is out!
What Can Tourists Do on Nyepi Day?
Tourists must follow the same rules as locals during Nyepi Day. These include:
✅ Staying indoors: You are not allowed to leave your accommodation or explore the island.
✅ Avoid noise: Keep music, TV, and other activities at a low volume to respect the silence. Maybe use the headphones on that day!
✅ Preparing ahead: Stock up on food, drinks, and other essentials before the day begins. Don’t go nuts at the supermarket, it’s only for a day – we are not in Covid times!

How To Prepare For Silence Day In Bali
🍵 Book a Comfortable Stay: If you’re prone to feeling confined, book a villa or hotel with ample space, amenities, and possibly a pool. Keep reading for my villa and resort recommendations!
🥑 Stock Up: As mentioned before, make sure you get everything you’ll need a few days earlier—snacks, drinks and toiletries. If you live in Bali, make sure you have something to eat that doesn’t require cooking in case your gas runs out (you never know) and check your filtered water tank as well!

Where to Stay During Nyepi Day in Bali
If you’re in Bali for Nyepi Day, choosing the right accommodation can make a big difference in how you experience this unique event. Some hotels and resorts offer special Nyepi Day packages however keep in mind that most packages require a minimum stay of two nights due to the restrictions during Nyepi. Resorts like InterContinental Bali Resort in Jimbaran and The Elysian in Seminyak are offering “silence day” packages, so make sure you mention it when reserving online (you can send them a message through the website).

Get a Spacious Villa:

🏊 Check that there’s access to entertainment facilities, such as a pool, gym, or in-room entertainment, as you won’t be able to leave the property.
🛒 If you’re booking a villa, confirm that you’re fully stocked with groceries, water, and any essentials before the day begins.
Where Is Nyopi Day Exactly Celebrated?
It’s important to note that Nyepi Day is celebrated everywhere in Bali, but also Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan. However, the Gili Islands (which are part of Lombok) don’t observe this tradition. If you prefer to avoid the silence, heading to the Gili Islands is an option, as it will be business as usual there.

⬇️ Stay: Maybe take this as a new experience and embrace the local culture. Try meditating for the first time if it’s new to you or spend some time on your own. Definitely book a spacious villa or room in a resort if you feel claustrophobic or want to treat yourself to a nice place!
➡️ Go: If you think staying indoors all day will be difficult, consider leaving Bali for a few days. As mentioned before you can look into Gili Islands or nearby countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, or Vietnam are excellent alternatives. Just remember that flights won’t operate on March 29th, so plan your travel carefully!
