When I’m choosing a luxury hotel in Kuala Lumpur, I’m quite picky about where I spend my money. I want a comfortable bed, a bathroom I actually want to spend time in, an excellent breakfast and, because KL gets hot, a pool where I can properly relax.
After several stays in Kuala Lumpur, Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur was my favourite overall. I loved the service, my bath overlooking the city and the rooftop views towards the Petronas Twin Towers. The bed and pillows were also so comfortable that I genuinely didn’t want to leave!
But I wouldn’t choose the same hotel for every trip. Alila Bangsar has my favourite pool, Hilton Kuala Lumpur is my pick for breakfast and KL Sentral convenience, Mandarin Oriental wins if you want a huge outdoor pool beside KLCC, and Four Seasons stood out to me for its gym and sauna.

#1: Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur: My Favourite Overall
I spent four nights at Banyan Tree, and it’s my favourite Kuala Lumpur hotel so far. My Signature Banyan Retreat room was on the 56th floor, with a spacious bathroom and a deep bath overlooking the city. (For more room photos and details, read my Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur review).
The service was incredible, but the rooftop bar was another reason this hotel stood above the others for me.
Looking towards the Petronas Twin Towers from up there at night was unforgettable. Even if I were only staying for a couple of nights, I’d make time for a drink on the rooftop.
What Is The Pool Like?
The hotel has a covered open-air pool with skyline views.
There were only a few people there when I went, with plenty of available sunbeds and towels. I really liked having shade too, especially when KL was at its hottest.
The gym is on the same floor. It isn’t huge, but it had what I needed for a workout.
If having a large hotel gym were one of my main priorities, though, I’d choose Hilton, Mandarin Oriental or Four Seasons instead.
Breakfast And Location
I loved the breakfast here! You’re given a menu with Western and Asian options, as well as cold food on a buffet. The staff also took my food allergies seriously, which I never take for granted, even in luxury hotels.
Banyan Tree is in Bukit Bintang, with a covered pedestrian bridge connecting it directly to Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. I found this really convenient for walking to shops and restaurants, especially when I wanted to avoid the heat or rain!
Who Would I Recommend It To?
Choose Banyan Tree if you want the best all-round luxury experience from the hotels I stayed at.
I went by myself and had the best time, but I’d recommend it for couples too. You could have a romantic dinner followed by drinks on the rooftop, with the Petronas Towers lit up in front of you.
I’d choose Alila instead if a stylish pool matters more to you than the location, while Hilton would make more sense if easy transport and breakfast were your priorities.
➡️ Check availability at Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur for a stay with Petronas Tower views from the rooftop bar and rooms high above the city.
#2: Alila Bangsar: The Pool I Loved Most
I really liked my room at Alila Bangsar; from the furniture to the lighting, it felt especially cosy in the evening.
My room was on a high floor with lovely views across the city. I couldn’t see the Petronas Twin Towers, but I still really enjoyed the view.
The gym was another highlight. It had a good selection of machines and free weights, so I was able to get a full workout in during my stay.
What Is The Pool Like?
Alila’s pool was insane! It’s on Level 40, with views across the city and an opening to the sky above. I loved how the pool fits into the hotel’s architecture, but what I appreciated just as much was the amount of shade.
The heat in KL is no joke, so having somewhere to relax without being in direct sun made a big difference!
Of all the hotels in this guide, Alila is the one I’d choose if the pool were my main priority.
Banyan Tree is still my favourite overall, but if you told me I had to spend an entire afternoon around the pool, I’d pick Alila.
Breakfast And Location
Breakfast was à la carte during my stay.
It was nice, but I would have preferred more options and possibly a buffet too. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for me, especially when I’m going to be sightseeing for hours afterwards.
If breakfast matters as much to you as it does to me, Hilton is the stronger choice.
Alila is connected to Bangsar LRT station by a covered pedestrian bridge.
I literally walked from the station to the hotel, and I found it easy to join tours and get around Kuala Lumpur using public transport.
Who Would I Recommend It To?
Choose Alila if you want to combine sightseeing with actual downtime at your hotel.
It worked really well for me when I wanted to explore during the day, then come back for a swim or workout.
If you stay here, I’d leave at least one afternoon free to enjoy the hotel rather than treating it as somewhere you only return to sleep.
If you’d rather stay right in Bukit Bintang or beside KLCC, I’d choose Banyan Tree or Mandarin Oriental instead.
➡️ Take a look at Alila Bangsar’s rooms and pool. If you want a hotel where you’ll genuinely be tempted to spend part of the day swimming, this is my pick.
I stayed at Hilton Kuala Lumpur for 24 hours after missing a flight connection, and it turned out to be such a convenient place to spend the extra time.
The internal connection to KL Sentral was particularly useful in that situation. I could get there easily, have a bath, use the gym, eat an amazing breakfast and recover from a disrupted journey without making things more complicated.
The service was also exceptional.
What Is The Pool Like?
Hilton has an outdoor pool with a waterslide.
It was perfectly fine for a swim, but the pool wasn’t what made the stay memorable for me. I found Alila’s much more exciting.
I’d choose Hilton for its other strengths and treat the pool as an extra.
If spending hours around the pool is an important part of your Kuala Lumpur trip, I’d choose Alila or Mandarin Oriental instead.
Breakfast And Gym
The breakfast was one of the best I’ve had in my life.
The buffet felt enormous, with Western and Asian dishes and seemingly everything I could think of. More importantly, the quality matched the amount of choice.
I’d happily stay here again just knowing I had that breakfast waiting for me the next morning.
The gym was another highlight. There are proper machines and enough open floor space to put down a mat and stretch.
If you like maintaining your normal workouts while travelling, Hilton was one of the better options I tried.
Who Would I Recommend It To?
Hilton is my pick if transport, breakfast and fitness facilities matter more to you than having the most beautiful pool.
Its KL Sentral location was perfect for my unexpected 24-hour stay, but I’d also consider it for a longer visit if I expected to use the trains frequently.
I’d choose Hilton over Alila for a short stay or layover, simply because the location makes everything easier.
➡️ Check Hilton Kuala Lumpur availability for your dates. I’d happily return for that breakfast, and having the station connected to the hotel made my disrupted journey much easier.
#4: Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur: An Infinity Pool Beside KLCC Park
Some people say “there are hotels and then there is the Mandarin“.
I can understand why.
The level of service here was really high, and I found it similar to Banyan Tree. The staff went out of their way to make me feel comfortable and relaxed, which I particularly appreciated as a solo traveller.
The bed was super comfortable too, with a lot of attention paid to the pillows and sheets.
I also really liked the gym. It’s spacious, well equipped with machines and weights, and it was never especially busy when I used it.
What Is The Pool Like?
The outdoor infinity pool overlooks KLCC Park and the city skyline.
There are cabanas and daybeds around the pool terrace, plus a separate children’s pool.
Compared with Alila’s more enclosed pool, Mandarin Oriental’s is completely open to the sun and feels huge.
If you want a large pool with open views, I’d choose Mandarin Oriental. If you prefer shade like I do, I’d choose Alila instead.
That’s probably the biggest difference between the two for me.
How Was Breakfast?
Breakfast was delicious, with loads of options at the buffet.
There were Western and Asian dishes, both savoury and sweet, and I really enjoyed it.
I’d seen complaints about the breakfast tables being too close together, but I personally didn’t even notice that during my stay.
Who Would I Suggest It To?
Choose Mandarin Oriental if you want a large pool, excellent service and a KLCC location.
I also saw plenty of families here, and the children’s pool makes it an easier choice if you’re travelling with kids.
For solo travellers, I thought the attentive service made it feel very comfortable too.
I’d go for Mandarin Oriental over Banyan Tree if the big pool and immediate KLCC location mattered more to me than Banyan Tree’s rooftop atmosphere.
➡️ Find your room at Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur if a huge pool, comfortable bed and attentive service are at the top of your wishlist.
#5: Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur: Swimming Laps And Petronas Views
Four Seasons is worth considering if you love modern hotels and want to spend time enjoying the facilities during your stay.
The rooms have electronic controls for things like lighting, and there’s a spa if you fancy treating yourself to a massage.
For me, though, the gym and sauna were the features that stood out most.
What Is The Pool Like?
The outdoor pool is 25 metres long, so it works well if you want to swim proper laps rather than just cool down.
There are loungers set in the water, a separate spa pool and a children’s splash pool.
The pool looks especially beautiful around sunset when the skyscrapers surrounding it begin to light up.
If you genuinely like swimming for exercise, I’d choose Four Seasons over Banyan Tree simply because the 25 metre pool is better suited to laps.
Rooms And Breakfast
You can choose between city and park views.
Some park view rooms also overlook part of the Petronas Twin Towers, so check the exact room category if that view is important to you.
A general “city view” doesn’t automatically mean you’ll see the Towers, which is something worth paying attention to throughout Kuala Lumpur.
The original version of this post included general comments about other guests praising the rooms and breakfast. I’d actually remove those unless you have firsthand details you can add here.
Your own experience is much stronger than repeating what other guests say.
Gym And Location
The gym has cardio equipment and weights, with windows overlooking KLCC Park.
I really liked it, and the sauna was an even bigger bonus for me. I love following a workout with some time in the sauna, so that genuinely added to my stay.
Suria KLCC is nearby too, so you’ve got plenty of shops and restaurants within easy reach.
Who Would I Suggest It To?
I’d recommend Four Seasons if having a very good hotel gym, sauna and proper lap pool matters to you.
It’s also a good fit if you like modern hotels and want to stay close to KLCC.
At the prices I found, it was the most expensive hotel in this comparison, so I wouldn’t automatically pay more just for the Four Seasons name.
I’d choose it when I knew I was going to use the facilities that make it stand out.
If you mainly want my favourite overall luxury experience, I’d still choose Banyan Tree.
➡️ See which rooms are available at Four Seasons Kuala Lumpur and look for a park view room if you’d love the chance to see part of the Petronas Towers from your window.
Which Luxury Hotel In Kuala Lumpur Would I Book Again?
If I were booking one of these hotels again tomorrow, Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur would still be my first choice.
I loved the combination of the room, bath, service, Pavilion connection and rooftop views. It felt luxurious in the areas that actually matter most to me.
But I’d change my choice depending on the trip.
Banyan Tree is my best overall pick.
Alila Bangsar is the hotel I’d choose for the pool.
Hilton Kuala Lumpur is my choice for breakfast, KL Sentral and a short stay.
Mandarin Oriental makes the most sense if you want a big pool and KLCC location.
Four Seasons is the one I’d choose for the gym, sauna and lap swimming.
FAQ’s On Hotels In Kuala Lumpur
Yes. Foreign visitors pay a tourism tax of RM10 per room, per night. Malaysian citizens and permanent residents are exempt.
I’ve always paid this directly at the hotel, so allow for it in your budget even if you’ve already paid for your room online. For a three-night stay in one room, that’s an extra RM30. Check your booking confirmation to see whether it has already been collected.
It depends on the rate you choose. The same room may be offered with or without breakfast, so check the inclusions before paying. Hilton’s breakfast was one of the highlights of my stay, so I would compare the breakfast package with the cost of adding it separately.
A city view does not necessarily mean a Petronas Towers view. My room at Alila Bangsar had lovely views from a high floor, but the towers were not visible. If seeing them from your room matters to you, choose a room category that explicitly includes that view.
Check your arrival airport, transfer time and the hotel’s check-in and check-out times. An early arrival does not automatically give you access to your room.
Hilton worked really well for my 24-hour stop because of its connection to KL Sentral. For a shorter connection, my guide to showers at Kuala Lumpur Airport can help if you mainly need somewhere to freshen up.
How To Get To And Around Kuala Lumpur
I usually land in Kuala Lumpur late, so I prefer booking a driver to take me straight to my hotel. By then, I’m tired and the last thing I want is to carry my luggage between stations!
➡️ Reserve your driver through Klook.com, I get the best rates here! I love that someone is tracking my flight and waiting for me at the airport.
Alternatively, take the KLIA Ekspres to KL Sentral or choose the airport bus for a cheaper option, then continue to your hotel by public transport or Grab.
Once you’re in the city, you can combine walking with the MRT, LRT and monorail, using Grab when you’d prefer a ride directly to your destination. If you’re planning to explore beyond the city and want more flexibility, compare car hire options and enter your own travel dates.
If you’re used to using Grab scooters elsewhere in Southeast Asia, bear in mind that I’ve only found Grab cars in Kuala Lumpur, not scooters.
📱 Stay Connected In Kuala Lumpur
I like having mobile data ready as soon as I land, so I can find my way to the hotel without looking for WiFi. I used Ubigi on my Kuala Lumpur trip, and it was handy for checking directions and booking Grab rides while I was out exploring.
You can read how I got on in my Ubigi eSIM Malaysia review.
